The Brief
The room had good bones, but that was about it. The decor was dated, and before any design work could start, the radiator needed replacing and the walls needed re-plastering.
With six weeks until the due date, there wasn't time for a slow start. The brief: calm and neutral as a base, with room to add playfulness later, and a space that would still work as a proper bedroom once their son outgrows the cot.

The Plan
Every measurement mapped before anything got ordered, the cot away from the door, the chair angled for the window light, storage sized to the exact gap it needed to fill.
Get the plan right on paper, and nothing ends up wedged in as an afterthought.
The Process
Before any of the nice bits, the room needed sorting out properly, new radiator, new carpet, walls stripped back and re-plastered.
Not the fun part of a nursery project, but skipping it just means painting over a problem that resurfaces in a year.
The After
Calm and neutral as the base, with just enough personality layered on top.
Striped wallpaper on the back wall and warm wood tones, and a storage wall doing the hard work. A room that works now, and won't need a re-think once the cot becomes a bed.
Design Decisions

The three decisions that shaped the room from there were neutral tones with texture, open shelving that can adapt as he grows, and layered lighting instead of spots.
WHY
Neutrals, but patterns
We kept the core colours neutral, but added texture through the herringbone wallpaper & stripey blinds. So the room has depth without committing to anything too bold.
WHY
Open shelves, not fixed.
No one knows exactly how a child will use a room. Open, modular shelving means it's easy to reconfigure as needs change, rather than replaced.
WHY
Three light sources, no spots.
A rattan pendant for soft, filtered light, plus a rechargeable table lamp and wall light for flexibility. All dimmable, no wires to plan around.
